Why is myspace ruining our computer?

We have a very good computer guy who says the reason our hard drive had to be replaced was because of the spyware on myspace. He said, in fact, to give his card to all of my myspace friends because they will be calling him sooner or later. Now I have to go the library to use it which is really difficult and I'm hating it!!! Is there any way to be able to use myspace on your own computer at home without ruining our hard drive?

P.S. He gave us the best firewall protection there is.

Why is myspace ruining our computer?

I doubt that its myspace as much as it is your downloading of freeware and use of file sharing sites!

Hate to break it to you, but your very good computer guy, isn't very good. Anybody who replaces a hard drive to get rid of spyware doesn't know much about computers. You should have just backed up your important info from your computer, reformatted your hard drive and reinstalled Windows. After reinstalling you should have downloaded Ad-Aware, Spybot Search and Destroy and kept them updated and run them on a weekly basis along with a good antivirus. I sure hope you didn't actually pay this guy money and if you did demand it back. Also while some Myspace sites do have spyware embedded in them, most sites are fine (your friends Myspace pages are fine). You probably got them from other questionable web sites (think creatively).

PS on a side note don't trust anybody who says they know a lot about computers without asking around or working in the industry. Usually the people who know the most about computers keep it to themselves.

Do you think maybe your husband or kids might be going to questionable web sites? YOU might not be the culprit. Also you might have downloaded something inadvertently, thinking it was a normal system pop up and installed it. Get a good pop blocker like Google Toolbar, and follow the rest of my steps. And for gods sake go get your money back from this creep.

It just sounds very suspicious that this guy would "replace" your hard drive over spyware. He might have a good business, but if all his business was people that didn't know any better, how would you know if he is "good". Sorry to get so emotional I just hate seeing people getting take advantage of. I wouldn't think your husband would be cheating on you, but he might look at porn (not sure if that is your definition of cheating or not, it is with my GF ;) ). Are you just having an issue with getting to Myspace the web site? If so check this out my sources area. If you are just worried about spyware just follow my tips and you should be safe. Best advice I can give you is that if something is asking to install itself on your computer, search it on Google first and see what other people say. Best of luck and let me know how it goes.

you have to go to "c" and delete cookies, history and temporary Internet files and it will free up tons of space on your computer as it stands you probably don't have enough ram to handle all the mega files on most myspace pages.

You can resolve this problem by adding ram and keeping the garbage bites cleaned off your computer.

It's hardly likely that MySpace buggered-up your computers hard drive, as it's owned by NewsCorp (the same company that owns FOX TV)......... the more likely explaination is you were too lazy to install proper protection to start off with, such as:

SPYBOT: Search %26amp; Destroy

http://www.safer-networking.org

Anti-VIR PersonalEdition Classic (free anti-virus program)

http://www.free-av.com

ZoneAlarm Firewall (Free Edition)

http://www.zonelabs.com

Which is the absolute minimum (and all available free of charge, so there is NO EXCUSE not to have them installed to protect your computer).

I don't think spyware can have a physical effect on your hard drive. I'd recommend using Spybot: Search and Destroy as it's a good spyware remover.

If it is so bad as to cause problems, it's just software so you can just reformat the hard drive. You can format it yourself or ask a technician to do it for cheap, so I still don't think your problem warranted a hard drive replacement.

Regarding Myspace, I don't think spyware should be a problem if you avoid clicking on those stupid ads(you seem savvy enough to be able to recognize them). In my experience, most of the trouble-makers in Myspace are just spammers. Still, turning of Windows Firewall is usually enough.
